Question

Windows update won't install

Jan 11, 2013 2:43AM PST

I've got a problem with a windows update that won't install.
I get an error code of 57E. The update is for Office2003.
I tried the troubleshooting for updates but my browser (Firefox) crashes when I try to use it. I did some research about error code 57E and the cure had to do with repair of registry. I'm not computer savy enough for that. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Which update? Be specific.

It will have some identifier such as KBnnnnnn or KBnnnnnnn. For Windows Update we use IE or run Windows Update from the Start Menu. You know by now not to use FireFox for this.

This is to replace ONE file. It's noted in the KB article. Many of the newer security suites may block changes to this folder so you need to check a few things such as installing from the standalone installer and trying this in SAFE MODE.
