Windows update site

Nov 18, 2004 8:46AM PST

OS, XP SP2
I am not sure what I need to do.
Went to MS web site to check if there are any critical
updates for my PC.
Window came up: Do you want to install this Software?
Windows Update-Publisher Microsoft Windows Publisher.
Clicked NO. After that I was not able to check on any windows update.
Do I have to install this software?
Thank you in advance.

When was the last time you visited there before today? You already have SP2 and there has been one critical update since SP2 came out but the newest Windows Update software came out 2 or 3 months ago at least. You should have had it then I would think unless it's been that long since you have been there. Did you get SP2 via the CD or download? The newest version is v5 if that helps any.

Got a new PC with XP and SP2 installed.
Was reading on this forums one should go right away to the MS website and check for updates, so I did.
Got one update soon as I sign on to the Internet.
Today I was just curios if there where more updates, and that is when I went to MS website and it ask me to download the software.
Thank you, for your help.

I'm surprised that you didn't get that prompt the FIRST time unless it's something other than the v5 version of the Windows Update software that it is asking about. Does it work now for you? If not, and you get the prompt again I would click yes because I can't see anything else it could be.

Guess, the reason why I did not get the message before was. I sign on to the Internet and I was told there is an update available, so I downloaded it, but today I went to MS Website to see if there where more updates available, and this is when I was ask to download the software.
It seems I read about this before on the virus boards.
Somebody had the same experience but I can't find the article on it. I just don't remember if the said the downloaded the Windows update software.
Maybe it is because this is my first visit to MS since I have XP.

That is probably the case, The old version of Windows Update software for XP was v4. I just checked the date, on August 3rd when I went to Window's update, I was asked the same question and I clicked yes and they installed v5. It looks a little different than v4 did. Seeing as you have a new computer, i would imagine that the version on the computer was v4. The easiest way to tell is to go to Window's Update again and as the web site is loading,it will check for your current version and the web address will read http://v4.windows.........etc. if you still have the old one. Try that and see what happens.

Went to the website you provided, but I was unable to find what I was looking for.
This is very discouraging. Never ever had a problem like this before on my 98se.
On the update page it told me tough that my preferences are set to notify me when there is an update available.
Thank you again Roddy for the help, I'm sure this will not be my last question with XP SP2.

What would I do without the CNet forums and all this nice peoples here?

That means that you have your settings set for Automatic Updates I think. I wasn't aware that you could not do them manually if you set it set on automatic. I don't have mine set for automatic so I'm not sure. Check your Windows Firewall Security Center and see what you have it set for Nana. You can get to it either through the control panel or through System Tools.

Have my settings to NOTIFY me when there is an update, but not for Automatic Updates.
Like to know what is available, and read up on it first before I have them install any thing
on my PC.
Have my Windows firewall shut of, since I have Norton's firewall and Anti Virus.

Hoping sooner or later it will work itself out.

Thank you,

You only have to install this software if you wish to do auto updates. You may go to MS Website and download updates manually and install. However it probably is best to install and let the computer takes care of it.

You are answering a question on a thread that was resolved almost 2 weeks ago. Please look at the dates when answering questions. It's hard enough to keep up with the CURRENT ones. Thank you.
