Question

Windows Update Refuses to UPDATE!

Oct 9, 2014 6:01AM PDT

I'm running W7 Ultimate. I've had the computer for two years with no trouble until this happened.

I'll run Windows Update and it will show the updates as installed but when I want to sleep the computer, it goes to "Shutdown" mode and "installs" the same updates it said it installed in the first place.

I've heard about this problem and there's a bad update from MS that came out in August. I couldn't track the solution anywhere online.

Also, I ran System Restore but my restore point doesn't go back to August.

Answer
Which Update Numbers Are Repeating?
Oct 9, 2014 7:02AM PDT

It would help us if we knew exactly which updates you're having problems with.

The most common problems for such update repeats are those that are concerned with NET Framework.. If you find that the updates you're having issues with are involved with NET Framework, the best option is to uninstall the NET Framework versions in Control Panel-Programs and Features, then reinstall them again ONLY if you need them.

Remember also, it sometimes helps to install only one update at a time by doing it manually from the downloaded update installer file (type the update number into Google, then download each individual update to the desktop and run them manually), or "hide" all but one or two updates during the automatic updates process and let those one or two updates install individually. You can then determine which updates are causing the problem.

Hope this helps.

OK, Please Try This...

First, download the manual installer for each of the listed updates to your desktop from the links below. It will be a full offline installer for the updates.

Next, BEFORE installing the updates, please download and run the System Update Readiness Tool from the link below:

http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(Since you didn't tell us and I'm only guessing, all of the updates below are for the 64 bit version of Windows 7)

KB2676562 (This one is actually for 2012 and may be one of the key problem causers.. Install it manually last)
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29815

KB2871997
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42722

KB2872339
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40093

KB2882822
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40500

Once that's done, then turn OFF the automatic updates settings temporarily in the Control Panel-Windows Updates- by selecting"NEVER check for updates (not recommended)" from the options and save the change. Then look in Control Panel-Programs and Features-View Installed Updates on the left side of the screen. Search for the updates you're having problems with and if they are there, UNINSTALL them. Once that's done, restart the computer. After that, then manually install each of the downloaded updates listed above and restart the computer after each one. Once you've installed each one, then restart the computer again and enable the Automatic Updates option in the Control Panel-Windows Updates.

If the updates continue to show up for Windows Update, remember they should now be installed correctly and you can safely "Hide" them when they next pop up. This should cause them to be ignored and they shouldn't be a problem in the future.

Hope this helps.

Could also be a temp file thing - Windows Disk Cleanup has a feature which specifically cleans Windows Update debris. All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup
