1. When you visit the Windows Update site you may find the update list includes items that have already been installed which occurs if an update installed was not registered correctly. To resolve this issue, complete the following steps:
a. With this update selected, complete the installation. After restarting the computer, access the Windows Update site a second time and determine if the issue has been corrected.
b. Delete the applicable system registry key pertaining to this update (click Start, Run, type regedit, and then press Enter):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Updates\
and then either the key DataAccess or Windows Media Player where the item resides.
Note: Click the Plus box in front of HKLM to expand it and continue clicking/expanding appropriate folders (each word preceded by a backslash in the above address) until reaching either of the last two items wanted. Click, to bold/highlight the update in question, and then select Delete from the shortcut menu. Click Registry in the main menu and select Exit to save the session. Or simply click the x in the URHC of the window to close the Registry Editor tool. Respond with an affirmative to save the editing and to close the editor. Please note that the Registry Editor does not have an Undo function and that all changes are written directly to the disk immediately. If you're ever unsure, Export a copy of a key which can then be Imported/Merged back later to restore the registry just as it was previously. Restart the computer and perform step #1 again
2. Use the "Microsoft Security Bulletin Search site to list only the items applicable for a given system or programs used:
a. HotFix & Security Bulletin Service
b. Search by Product/Technology and Service Packs
c. Or, Search by Knowledge Base Article
3. Please read through the article, "General Information About Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition Hotfixes (Q206071)."
I have Win98 SE. It shows on the Microsoft Windows Update page under Installation History, that Security Update #823559 has been successfully installed 8 times since early December 2004..and I am still being prompted to install it over and over again. Has anyone else had this happen? And how can I make it stop?
