Windows Update not recognizing SP2

Nov 21, 2004 1:51PM PST

I installed SP2 off a disk after having two installation failures after downloading it.When I go to windows update it wants to me to download 75mgs & install SP2.Has anyone have any idea on why its not recognizing the SP2 version that is installed (& working)? Is there any correction I need to do?

That is strange Bob and I don't think it is normal. I used to get the same thing UNTIL I installed it from the disc. If I look at installation history it doesn't show up because I used the disc but Windows Update DOES recognize that I have SP2 installed. I've got a lot of Microsoft links saved about SP2 and I don't remember ever reading about that particular issue but I also wasn't looking for it at the time. I will look through them later when I have some time unless someone else comes up with an answer. In the meantime, maybe you could hide it? They give you that option there.

''Partial'' perhaps.

Note: SP2 includes a built-in AutoRecovery feature that lets you recover from an interrupted or unsuccessful installation (Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs) and choose to uninstall the partial installation, [Q878455].

Thanks Roddy & Bill,
its not that I'm having problems as such with SP2,but if another update comes in I don't want to download the entire progeam again.
Will have a look through those files you both left & see if I can sort it out
Thanks again
Bob

PS

The other problem Bob is that if Windows Update does not recognize that you already have SP2 installed, there is no way of telling whether any updates that it says you need are going to be correct either. Just something else to think about.

The article [Q319109] explains that when you visit the Windows Update site, you may find that the list of updates includes items already installed and may occur if the updates already installed have not been registered correctly. If this generally applies, also see the article [Q822798].

What is the size of the downloaded file on disk from which you installed SP2 ?

I downloaded mine from HERE.

Although the site stated that the size is 272MB, the download file is 266MB. If yours was from a different site, perhaps you should try another download from a different site.

My install took some 30 minutes without problems - but my machine was first cleaned of spyware and other parasites, have check disk and defrag ran, screen saver and task schedulling stopped....(but with system restore on).

Addendum

Windows Update showed no other critical updates for the OS.

Papa
It just wanted me to download 75mgs which would make SP2 about 340mgs. The thing is SP2 seems to work fine & have had no problems. Just can't understand why Windows update wants me to download something thats already insalled.

You mentioned that you have had two failures before succeding. Although it works, erhaps your present installation is missing some files of 75 MB - have you consider unistaaling the SP2, clean up, then reinstall ?

Yes I did.
Yesterday I downloaded the 75 to see what would occur, the download took approximately 5 seconds so I presume what ever I needed was already there.
Went on to install it, this took about 20 minutes, get the big 'Installed successful'restart your computer notice, clicked on that after normal boot up Windows started loading then 'froze' left it for an hour, had to reset & start in 'safe mode' after a few more attempts to reboot, I went to 'systems restore'& restored everything prior to 'Update' everything is working well again.
Think I might uninsall & reinstall, but not in a hurry as the system seems to be working.
