windows update is slowing system down

windows-xp. how do i stop winupdate from starting or how do i stop it from attempting to update. this causes my computer to practicly come to a halt since it uses almost 100% cpu time slices.

winupdate.exe, that is a virus or a trojan. There are a number of them out there. More than likely you have one of those but you didn;t go into detail. That is probably NOT Windows Update if it is taking 100%CPU. You should post this in the Virus and Secirities forum with a little more information.
