go into your internet options under the tool menu in internet explorer, click connections, click LAN settings button, then uncheck "automatically detect settings" That should do it!

Windows Update at Microsoft Site Fails

In reply to: Re:Windows Update Function for Windows XP

I have also been unable to use the update function on the Microsoft Website. After I click Update the screen goes blank and freezes IE 6.0.

Someone suggested unchecking the automatically detect settings on LAN settings. Mine was not checked. Any other ideas on how I can access Microsoft Update? I am running XP Home SR-2. I have recertified my copy of Windows XP in the past.

If Microsoft has an update to fix this problem, how do I obtain it?

"not able to get to the windows update site" meaning that you cannot access this web site only but can browse the Internet?

If yes then you have a pest.

Can't access Windows Update Site

In reply to: Windows update

As far as I know, I can access any site on the Internet except the Microsoft Windows Update site. PC-Cillan, Spybot, Microsoft Anti-spy, and Ad-Aware say that I have no pests. I downloaded a fresh copy of IE 6.0 and installed it over the original. No improvement. I agree that because Windows Update seems to be the only site I cannot access that a pest must be the cause but I can't find it. After I run PC-Cillan it informs me that there are several "Critical Updates" that need to be downloaded. Perhaps one of these would prevent the problem but I can't get to them to download them.
