Windows Update Fails

Jul 7, 2007 5:32AM PDT

Have Win xp with SP2. Update working OK since installed several years ago. Last few months it stopped. Now, when I go to the update site, it gives me the error message 0x80070020, indicating that the update failed. MS Update tech has tried many suggestions, none have worked. I deleted AVG, which I thought was the problem, and rebooted. Same error. Also have ZoneAlarm firewall and NAV2006. Shutting off both temporarily had no effect. Ideas?

The common denominator seems to be what you mentioned about disabling AV

This LINK mentions the same, but maybe the process is different then the one you tried.

Try this first, disable automatic updates and try again at windows update.

Windows Update Fails
Jul 8, 2007 5:46AM PDT

Tom, thanks for the suggestion. I have been to the MS page in the link you provided, and tried everything they said. Nothing made a difference; Update still fails with that error code. I cannot identify the file that MS claims is "in use", the MS Update tech hasn't even come up with it yet, but we continue to try different things.

Next I will go through Tallin's post. Lots to try in there. Many thanks for the assistance. I'll keep trying.

I am sorry to see you are having problems with your Windows Updates.

Can I maybe hop in here with some help for you to check/try.

Step 1:
Verify that your computer's date and time are accurate and that Internet Explorer language option is not empty.
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the lanuage button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options" dialog.

When checking your date (including the year) and time, also check the Internet Time and Time Zone. Double click on the date/time in the notification/system tray area (near the clock) select Internet Time Tab and then select update now. If it's not already checked, check automatically synchronize with an internet Time Server - WinXP.

Step 2:
Also check these settings:
1. Tools>Internet Options> Advanced
2. Scroll down to the Security Settings.
3. Make sure that the two boxes are checked that say "Enable SSL 2" or "Enable SSL 3".
4. Uncheck "Check for server certificate revocation".

Step 3:
Also delete Temporary Internet Files
1. Tools>Internet Options >General
2. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, Clck OK

Step 4:
1. Tools> Internet Options > Security
Click Trusted sites, click Default level.
Click the sites button and clear the checkbox "Require server verification"
(httpHappy for all sites in this zone."
Now add the following:
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

If required, reboot and try Windows Update again. If still no success, have a look at the following links for more clues.

Make sure you haven't got anything blocking Windows Update like
Nortons,
Zonealarm etc
Also make sure you don't have a Web Accelerator working in the backgound such as
Net Zero
HiSpeed
Speedband etc

Clear out your temporary internet cache

Try a reboot and then try WU again.

Are there any specific error codes that you do see?
At what point does it continue when checking for the latest software, or when checking for updates?

Still no joy, then try Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click START, Choose Run
In the Run box, type "services.msc. " (without the quotes)
Click OK
Right click the Automatic Updates service,
Click stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder :
a. Click Start, click Run, type "%systemroot%" (without the quotes" and then click OK.
b. Right click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click START
Choose Run
In the Run box, type "services.msc." without the quotes"
Click OK
Right -click the Automatic Updates service
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Reboot if appropriate and try WU again.

Note when you rename the SoftwareDistribution folder - you will loose your history but not important.

Your Windows Update problem is exactly the same as I was having sometime ago and by going through the above (supplied from a Microsoft Newsgroup exchange) you should correct your problem and allow you to download and install WU's again.

Good Luck and don't hesitate to post back if you have a further question.

What really fried me was that...
Jul 8, 2007 5:59AM PDT

When I disable ZA and NAV I found them "still running." This meant that files could still be locked and WU could have trouble. To work around this I've been wiping both out and installing ZA and another AV but I also have found downloading the patch and installing it in safe mode to sometimes do the trick.

It's also important to research WHICH update is having trouble and if it really is needed. One poor owner was stressed about an update that WU keep wanting to install. That update was for IIS but they didn't have IIS installed so the update failed each time.

Windows Update... It's now fixed!!
Jul 8, 2007 7:20AM PDT

First of all, thank you to this forum, its moderators and its contributors. What a wonderful resource. One of the instructions in tallin's append pointed me to a Windows community newsgroup for xp where several people described the very same error code (0x80070020) that occurs when trying to update one's system. That points to an item in the MS knowledgebase that explain what the error is coming from, not how to fix it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883825/en-us

So I read further, and in the community discussion groups, one person said that they actually found a fix. He pointed to a module called dial-a-fix located at http://wiki.jdlizard.net/Dial-a-fix With appropriate caution and virus checking, I downloaded and executed it. Then I shutdown and re-booted to reload all the recreated dll's. Then I went to update.microsoft.com and tried to update again. This time it said "registering..." instead of the error failure, and then it identified the items to download and update (which I did). I was so elated that I donated a few dollars to these people who really understand all this MS update logic.

Only took the better part of 3 days to get there, but I could not have located them without this forum. Thank you, CNET.
