What error message exactly do you get and when?

The usual thing that happens after an update is that if you shutdown you get a "Don't turn off. Processing updates" from 0% to 30%, and then at boot the same but going from 30% to 100%, and then you can login. If in stead of being able to login you get an error message, I wouldn't call that "when starting the laptop".

And then if I go in the Settings app to Windows update it shows what updates have been done lately and if they succeeded or failed.

So please tell a little bit more about what happens and what the Settings app shows about it.
