Windows Update (Drivers)

Mar 16, 2004 11:18AM PST

Windows Update tells me that I need to download a Silicon Image Storage Software Update (94KB), but it will not install after download, and plants a question mark on the Silicon Image SATA Raid adapter in Device Manager. I then have to reinstall the SATA driver from a floppy. Anyone had a similar experience?

Windows Update site is the last place one should look for drivers.

The general practice is to use Windows Update site for Critical & Security Updates relating to XP.

For drivers it is better to download the latest ones directly from the manufacturer's site.
You will often see newer updates from there than the ones one Windows Update site.

Thank you David, somewhere in the back of my mind I recall being similarly advised, and to steer clear of the drivers on the Update site! It is worth being aware that you can butcher your system if you fall for them. Hardly a comforting thought, is it?
