Question

Windows Update anomaly

Apr 27, 2017 11:03AM PDT

Since the recent Windows 10 Creators Update, despite unticking the 'give me updates for other Microsoft products' option in update Advanced Settings, Windows Update is re-enabling this option whenever there are updates and downloading Microsoft Office updates - which I do not want. Is there any way to prevent these updates? It seems illogical that I am given a choice which I am unable to exercise.

To gain more control

You have to move from Home to Pro. This is noted all over the web.

Why this is, is that folk want Windows to just work. So Microsoft has changed course and sets the OS to repair "broken" settings and more.

This can royally upset those that wanted to control Windows like they did before. Some may take this as their reason to bail out to Linux (which is a good thing.)

Thanks for reply - but it still makes no sense to be offered an option you cannot take.

There are updates that don't seem to apply.

But on digging into the PC I often find why. That is, many PCs came with an Office trial version and it gets updates. Then we have outright gaffes and mistakes by Microsoft.

So I'm not sure if you researched this much but will share what I found.

Creators Update anomaly

Thanks again - I have done some research and other forums. It seems to be either a glitch in the Creators Update or else deliberate Microsoft policy - but either way to leave the option for the user to chose and then override it is unacceptable.

Just in case I didn't write this.

There are articles on the web about blocking updates. I don't write how here or endorse this since I've seen folk break the OS in doing so.
