Windows Update

Nov 26, 2003 9:04AM PST

I am trying to download Windows Update on my PC (Windows ME).

When I go to Start, Windows Update, a screen comes up that says "To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an Administrator or a member of the Administrative Group. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

I am not on a network, only 1 home computer. I have run the defrag, still does not work. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Shirl

There are pests that can set registry settings to prevent installations and some of the patches can be manually installed. If you had supplied the patch number I could have pointed you to a specific download for the patch in question.

Can you share this information?

There are 2 remedies listed on the page below:

This is the first method mentioned ( this is DIRECTLY from the page, don't blame this poster for any grammar mistakes, or if I copy something about another OS. You can discern what's for you.

Customer's may receive the following thank you page

Administrators Only

To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Bob,

Thank you for replying. Windows update has not been working for some time (probably over a year), and I do not know the patch number (or how to find it). I will try and get this info. I checked out the links you sent and will try to solve the problem that way.

Patch numbers and What date/time is it on that machine.
Nov 26, 2003 11:50AM PST

1. Check the date/time of the machine. I have not been happy about what happens if you set the time/date of your machine to a year or two off. Why does this matter? I don't know, but do check.

2. After the SCAN for UPDATES occurs, a list is presented. There are six digit numbers noted on each item.

Give me one?

Hi Bob,

Don't think I got that far, when I go to Start, Windows Update, a "Security Warning" screen pops up saying "Do you want to install and run "http//v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/CAB/x86/ansi/iuctl.CAB?37951.8862037037"?, I hit "yes" and it pops up again, and again....,,

What date/time is it on that machine and what have you done to fix this?
Nov 26, 2003 11:16PM PST

Be aware that even Microsoft will not tell you to "Click here to fix this issue." I supplied a troubleshooting URL and if you need help, you have to answer questions such as the Date/Time setting on your machine and what you have done from the Microsoft Windows Update troubleshooting work lists.

If not, then I gues we are done?

I had the same issue for the longest time.

I think I have the solution for you, but I do not know how to get it to you (it is very long to type out - no fax, etc.).

It involves copying the files iuctl.dll, iuident.cab, iuengine.dll and iuident.txt.

Strangely enough, the solution is available if you e-mail Microsoft support. (that's how I did it)

If you explain your exact issue, and they get back to you with a resolution involving these files, I can almost guarantee it will work.
