windows update

Dec 22, 2007 11:08PM PST

This is yet another reason to hate vista. on Dec. 15 vista was doing an automatic update as it does every day and for some unknown reason it started setting off my antivirus alarm, it has never done this in the past. I was able to stop this by not allowing the update, but update has not worked since. I recieve an error message saying it's blocked. the number is 8024402c, I tried all the things it tells you to do in get help to no alvail, I even went as far as removing my antivirus software shutting down all security and then trying the update and it still does not work. Microsoft is of little to no help at all as I have tried everythig that can be found on all thier websites and still nothing. Is there any solution to this other than reinstalling the operating system, if I have to do that I think it would be better to go with another operating system. It's really TRUE Vista does really SUCK.

Windows Update error 8024402C
Dec 23, 2007 6:30AM PST

If you receive Windows Update error 8024402C while checking for updates, you might need to do one of the following:

? This error might be caused by a program running on your computer that is preventing Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) from accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include firewalls, anti-spyware software, web accelerators, Internet security or antivirus programs. and proxy servers. If you have any of these programs running, you might need to turn them off while downloading and installing updates. Microsoft recommends you turn them back on after updating your computer. For more information, see Windows Update error 80072efd.

? If the computer is connected to a network at work, contact a network administrator. You probably receive updates using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), a service that enables network administrators to deploy and manage updates for all computers on a network. For more information about WSUS, go to the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) website.

? If your computer is usually connected to a network at work (for example, if you use a mobile PC but you are currently using it at home or at another location), you probably receive updates using WSUS and can not receive updates by connecting directly to the Internet or to another network, such as a home network. To solve the problem, connect to the network at work and try checking for updates again, or contact a network administrator.

? If the computer is connected directly to the Internet or to a home network (and never connected to a network at work), you might need to set Internet Explorer to automatically detect local area network (LAN) settings so Windows Update can go online to obtain updates. To do this, follow the steps below.

1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer.

2. Click the Tools button, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.

3. Under Automatic configuration, select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.

If the problem persists after you have followed the steps above, see this Knowledge Base article on the Microsoft Help and Support website or go to the Windows Update Support Center website to request support by e‑mail.

8024402C fix
May 27, 2008 12:17AM PDT

I was SO frustrated with this.. here's my fix/work-around to Vista error 8024402C
This is a proxy error right? So, even though I use Comcast - which doesn't USE a proxy, Vista wantsed to see one. So, I went to a free proxy list - I used Proxy 4 Free http://www.proxy4free.com/ and found a proxy that worked.. Proxy server 209.55.33.101 using port 80
Set my LAN Connections, in Explorer to that and Microsoft update WORKED.

NOW, after it works, if you go back to the the LAN Settings, click on the Advanced button and delete any entry in the Exceptions section - might work WITHOUT any proxy as it should from then on.

*curtsey* You're welcome!!

ANOTHER FIX FOR 8024402C
Feb 10, 2011 11:21AM PST

Hi guys...

I have had a similar problem which has taken me days and hours to sort out. I have been combing through this forum and every other forum that has purported to have a fix... but none worked for me. Finally I got onto Microsoft Support. Attached below is my email describing my problem (as well as the fixes I tried), and the reply from the support guy. It worked first go, however I have not seen this fix on any forum or website.

HERE IS MY TECH SUPPORT REQUEST:

"Windows Update has stopped working on my computer. I use manual update. My computer is on my home network connected via LAN to my broadband modem/router. It connects directly to the internet and I do not use a proxy. There are no other computers connected to the network. There is no requirement for a VPN. I have not changed this configuration in over 3 years and update has worked successfully over this time. My last successful update was 21Dec2010.

From that time on, I have received error 8024402C everytime I try to update. I previously was running "Trend Micro Internet Security 2010". I had uninstalled that antivirus program and was then running "AVG antivirus". I did not use their firewall - I used "windows firewall".

I have tried now numerous times to run "Windows Update" but kept receiving the above error. THE ONLY TIME "WINDOWS UPDATE" WORKS SUCCESSFULLY IS WHEN I DISABLE "WINDOWS FIREWALL".

I have now spent approximately 10hrs trying to solve this problem. So far I have tried the following steps:
1. I have completed all the steps in Knowledge Base Article ID: 900936
2. I have completed all the steps in Knowledge Base Article ID: 836941
3. I have uninstalled ALL antivirus software. THE IS CURRENTLY NO ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE RUNNING ON MY COMPUTER.
4. I have "port forwarded" ports 80 and 443 in my router to ensure they are not being blocked.
5. I have made sure all my TCP/IPv4 settings are set to detect settings automatically.
6. I have searched a number of forum articles and tried a number of other suggested fixes.
7. I have gone into "Windows Firewall" settings > Exceptions and created an exception for "wuapp.exe"
8. I have gone into "Administrative Tools" > "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" and manually created an "outbound and inbound exception" for "%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe" on ports 80 & 443.

None of these things have worked. The only way I can get "Windows Update" to work is by turning off "Windows Firewall". However I do not wish to have to leave windows firewall off to receive my updates.

I have attached the windowsupdate.log file to assist."

HERE IS THE TECH SUPPORT REPLY:

"Problem
=======
There is an error "8024402F" when you perform Windows Update

Solution
=======
1. Click "Start"-Type in the start search box "ncpa.cpl" and press Enter.
2 .Right click Local Area Connection (Which network adaptor you are using to access internet now) and select "Properties"
3. Double Click "Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)" in the Local Area Connection Properties Windows
4. Select "Use the following DNS server address" and type in the IP address 4.2.2.2 as "Preferred DNS server" and press twice "OK"
5. Try to perform scan Windows update again.

Please take your time with the above suggestions and let me know the results of this issue at your earliest convenience. If anything in my email is unclear, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am glad to help.

Thank you for your support and understanding."

THIS WORKED!(Note: He has addressed a different error code in the title) I HAVE NOW SENT THE BELOW REPLY ASKING WHY IT WASN'T REQUIRED BEFORE AND WHY IT WORKS NOW:

"I have never needed to enter an IP address in the DNS server before. Can you tell me why this has changed and why that this is now required?

Has there been a change to the Microsoft download servers?

Do I have to leave this in there all the time now or can it be removed at a later date?"

I hope this helps someone and save some serious time. I still don't know why this has worked and am awaiting a reply from Microsoft Support.
