windows update

whenever i download any windows update, upon rebooting my machine crashes and I have to restore from an earlier point of XP

does anyone know why this would happen ?

the system has a firewall and up to date virus protection

With your provided info, no one could guess what's wrong. For example:

- How many updates are you trying to install ? In other words, are they recent or a full bunch of older ones ?

- Is the crash specific to only one update (if so, provide its number) ?

- Is your PC Parasites Free ?

I'd try to download them (see Q323166 - "How to download Windows updates and drivers from the Windows Update Catalog") and install one by one in Safe Mode. It's a longer process, but it can give clues of what's wrong.

Some are accepting DRIVERS from Microsoft and learning a lesson. Here's the lesson.

Don't accept drivers from Windows Update.
