Where are XP updates saved to when you use the windows update utility?

They are normally downloaded and installed while you are online, so they are not really saved in the normal definition for saved files.
You can get the actual installable programs from Windows Catalog usually, to be installed later.
You can also check in your Windows folder as most are listed there after installing.

So you are not able to burn the updates to CD for later use for example if you need to reinstall XP?

No, not with a normal update. This is where the Catalog comes in handy.
And, you may want to check into the free CD that MS is offering. Some compilation of updates thru last October I believe.
