Feb 21, 2004 6:22AM PST

Windows update; I have eleven critical updates that are the same. Every time I download this update it says it is successful and I reboot. Every time I check "Windows Update" and the same critical update is back for downloading.

Using XP Home? I am and 826939 installed okay on my system and here's a link for info:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q826939

I'm wondering if perhaps you hadn't installed a previous update to Windows XP that may be required in order to get this roll up package to install? You might, also, want to install Belarc Advisor and see if this update shows as a successful install so we have more info. Go to www.belarc.com to download. It's a small program that will list all MS updates and other useful information.

If you read the info at the link then there's entries that state:

"Notes
The express installation is not available for Windows XP-based computers that do not have Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed. For additional information about how to obtain SP1, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322389 How to Obtain the Latest Windows XP Service Pack

The express installation is not available through Automatic Updates, the Windows Update Catalog, Software Update Services (SUS), or the Microsoft Download Center.
The express installation is available for Windows XP SP1-based computers that do not have one or more of the critical updates that are included in this update rollup."

and if you go further then it says how to install if express doesn't work.

I have SP1 and all other updates. I have tried several ways of installing this including downloading the entire 9MB file to my computer and installing it in safe mode. I have a dozen successful enties for this file including one I did this morning.

So you have a list of updates at "history". Try disabling your anti virus and then check for updates again ?

The article [Q319109] explains that when you visit the Windows Update site, you may find that the list of updates includes items already installed and may occur if the updates already installed have not been registered correctly. If this generally applies, see the article, [Q822798].
