Question

Windows Store won't open?

Apr 9, 2016 2:19PM PDT

So my old laptop died on me. Was originally windows 8 but I received a free upgrade to windows 10.

I bought a new laptop and logged in with my microsoft username etc... it was preinstalled with windows 10. Ran all the updates on the computer.

i try to go to windows store to download some apps but when I click on the store icon it goes gray and has what looks like a download bar below the icon but never moves. Eventually a message comes up that says "you'll need a new app to open this ms-windows-store"

Does anyone know a fix for this? Ive googled around and tried all these powershell commands but nothing works.

Try another user account.

If you are not logging in with MSFT's new email system, create a new user account and use your microsoft email username and such to log into that other account and see if that works.

Also, I hear that some security suites break this app store. Your post didn't note if you use other than Windows Defender.

The Microsoft Store uses Microsoft's email system.

So that gives us 2 reasons it may not work. I'd create a new account to test this out with rather than muck with my working account.

create a new microsoft account?
Apr 9, 2016 4:01PM PDT

do you mean make a whole new microsoft account? Logout of my current windows user and create a new user under the new microsoft account?

Yes.

The Microsoft Store uses Microsoft's own email system and it's login.

Given you are using a Yahoo login, that's one possible cause.
And Bitdefender too. I have to defer to Bitdefender's support on that but when I see this issue I move to stock first.

That's what stood out so far and what I encountered so far.

Is there more to the story like you are in Estonia? Be sure your date/time is set and other things work like Cortana.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_store/windows-10-store-wont-open/bce5ab37-240b-4932-9f02-e8fcb389ab0a?auth=1 is pages long with a lot of clues scattered about.

The thing here is there is no smoking gun yet. Last week I had a call about a W10 bomb. Turns out they had used a torrent version of W10. All bets were off on that one. It was cracked.

This should NOT be the case with a new laptop. HOWEVER you can make it a warranty issue. It should be working in stock form. And this is important. We can't install any AV or use registry cleaners, torrents and more and expect support. I know that sounds horrible but something's up here.

Answer
I had the same issue but I used my MS account to login
Apr 10, 2016 1:56PM PDT

to Windows 10. I wasn't able to create a new account from within windows 10 but you can do it in a command prompt. Windows Key - X and select command command prompt (ADM) and use

net user /add [username] [password] to create account
net localgroup administrators [username] /add to assign the account admin rights

Reboot and select the new account. Windows will create your new profile after a restart.

You will be prompted the first time for account info for Onedrive and the Store and you can use your MS account to access those using your new local account it will save account to login and sync to MS account logins. Also if you use Chrome if you login to your Gmail account your bookmarks can me use as you will be linked to your gmail account.
