In the post noted below, STARTER is useful to find it.

Parasite removal programs.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0 notes the five scanning tools and removal tools that are fairly safe. If one does encounter an issue, its always been damage done by the MALWARE. The most common issue being Layered Service Provider replacement which you can use LSPFIX (Hint: use http://www.google.com to find).

The thread has follow on discussions about new links if you don't want to use Google to find an item.

Bob

PS. All the tools are free.

It's something in the registry. Explorer keeps track of where it as at shutdown, and probably fails to clear it. If starter doesn't find it try...

1. Shutting down with Explorer open in a different folder, see if it opens in that one. Then close explorer and shutdown and see if it's normal.

2. If explorer opens in the new folder, repeat #1 with a newly created quite unique folder name (something like qyertyah or mytestfolder) and see if you can find that string in the registry related to explorer somehow. Then maybe delete that line or key, of whatever (depends on what you find)?

3. If it started happening less than 5 days ago, the most easy remedy is booting in MS-DOS, type scanreg /restore and choose a date prior to the onset of the problem. No need then to try #1 and #2, unless you are interested in the cause of the problem.

Please let us know if #1 or #2 helps, and what exactly you found. It's a recurring problem and a good solution might help others.

Hope this helps.

''Explorer windows'' opens on bootup.

1. Check the WIN.INI file for the presence of an orphan blank space on either of the two lines for Load= and/or Run=. Should either appear blank, simply delete them and save the file.

2. To start the System Registry Editor, click Start, Run, type regedit, and then press Enter.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Note: Click the Plus box in front of one of the first words in an above line to expand it. Continue clicking/expanding appropriate folders (each word preceded by a slash) until reaching the last word. Click that word to bold/highlight it.

a. In address #1, you're looking for a key contained in the right window labeled DesktopProcess with a value of 1. If this key and value exist, click the key name and press the Del key on the keypad, [Q228502].

b. In #2 and #3, you're looking for an invalid/stray String value containing only a single quote character ("") entry in the Run addresses, and if found, delete them.

c. Click Registry in the main menu and select Exit to save the session. Or simply click the x in the URHC of the window to close the Registry Editor tool. Respond with an affirmative to save the editing and to close the editor.
