with a Barton core on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe Version 2 with 512 of Kingston Ram 27700 M/B Running Windows XP Professional + SP 1 with no problem, I want to install Service Pack 2 but have heard on the web that installing #2 will crash my system with the AMD Proc,
would be very greatfull if any one knows if this is true?, would hate to mess up a good machine.
thanks for any help. LIMEYDE

installed SP2 back on September 2nd and not had any problems whatsoever. Most that had problems were not prepared or had spyware/etc. on the machine.

The primary issue for installing SP2 on XP is Preparation, preparation, preparation.

Before installing, scan for viruses and spyware. Clean out all the Temp folders, remove .tmp files, clean out your Temporary Internet folder, then run Error Checking/Chkdsk and Defrag to optimize the hard drive. Restart the computer and when you're ready to install, shut down all firewalls and antivirus programs and install SP2. My preference for installation is the SP2 CD or the full download from the link below:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers

The download above is a large download, about 270 MB, so only use the above if you've got a broadband connection. I've saved it to a CD so I can use it later, if need be. In addition, the current instructions for "repairing" Internet Explorer 6 SP2 is to reinstall SP2.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Grif and roddy23, makes sense to prepair the computer for the update and make sure it's as clean as possible. Will be updating soon, I have the SP2 that Microsoft sent, will let you know how it went.
