General discussion

Windows security Center

Jan 5, 2006 1:17PM PST

I tried to look up up old threads about this but I am confused. I have an e machine T5026,pent 4 .512 MB. Today I installed my new Norton 2006 AV and I also got the new patch installed. I have spy bot, Ad aware, Webroot spy sweeper, spyware blaster, Ewido, microsoft anti spyware, and Spyware Doctor. I just ran Spy Bot and it told me my windows Security Center was turned off. Int. Options, Windows firewall and automatic updates. Do I want these turned off. I'm sure they were on before today. Yes,because last night I didn't get that notice. What should I do about this? Did the new Norton AV do this? Thanks Barb

I read that thread earlier but could not get to the spy bot forum. Thanks for sending it . But the Norton I installed today is Just AV. So Should I leave that secrity center turned off? It has the firewall turned off too and my Norton doesn't have a firewall. That is what I am confused about Barb

Hi Barb,

It won't be the Security Center that is turned off, but rather the notification features.

If you go to the Control Panel, and open up the Security Center, you will see on the left side, under Resources, a link, Change the way Security Center alerts me. Clicking on this will open a window with 3 options for Firewall, Automatic Updates, and Virus Protection. These will all be unchecked, which is what Spybot was alerting you to. You can re-enable these alerts if you want Windows to alert you to the state of these 3 items. It is likely that your Norton AV turned off the alert for virus protection, so that NAV will alert you if it is disabled, rather than Windows.

Also, while you are there, you should activate the Windows Firewall, if you do not have a firewall installed on your machine.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, This is what I wanted to know. I did turn it back on last night. And my firewall. That was what I was mainly concerned about. Can't use Zone Alarm cause it kept crashing my system. So I depend on the windows fire wall. And I think my Qwest DSL has one too. Barb

(4th one down)explaining its notification turned off, but I wanted you to get the whole idea from the tread (substitute AV for Security Center). Glad Brent got to you. My Thanks to him also. Happy
