Windows question

by David Evans / May 18, 2005 7:06 AM PDT

I'm running XP Home at work. A few days ago I downloaded the latest Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. A search showed it was at
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install\Windows-KB890830-V1.4-ENU.exe, so I made a shortcut to that exe file and put it on the desktop.

I ran the program a few times, then yesterday the shortcut no longer worked. I looked at the directories in that path and the ''install'' directory was missing, but I didn't delete it. So I'm wondering if Windows deleted it on its own, or if something has gone awry.

I downloaded the program again to a folder on the desktop and run it from there, but still I wonder why that ''install'' folder disappeared.

If you download and install from the Windows Update function, the tool runs once and then deletes itself. I don't know how it works if installed by another method.

Does that help any?

First time I did download from Windows Update

In reply to: Hi DavE,

But I thought that the tool was supposed to run once a week or so by itself. To do that it couldn't delete itself after one run. But your explanation sounds more like what happened than anything I can think of.

For some strange reason...

that reminded me of that scene in "Blazing Saddles" where the black guy points his own gun to his head and says something like "ok, do as I say or I'll shoot the ******!" lol (I censored that one myself)

If you have Windows update turned on, it will download
by Kiddpeat / May 18, 2005 8:08 AM PDT

every week. You get the latest version, and there is less chance that a nasty will disable it.

If you want to keep it in a folder

You can download it from here but I am thinking MS may update this from time to time. Download the file to a temporary directory or one of your choosing/making and you can run it as a freestanding utility.
