Windows Protection Error. System halted

Mar 29, 2005 9:52AM PST

4 year old Compaq desktop. 512 Ram, 40GB hard drive, 900MHz AMD processor, Windows ME.

Worked well until two days ago. Now won't start. 'Windows protection error' message comes up. Went to Control panel, systems, troubleshoting and unchecked Disable System Restore. Reboot, no response, same error message. Goes to safe mode, I can see documents etc, but not getting any furthere.
I have to have it up and running as there are a couple of softwares installed I cannot uninstall and reinstall on new laptop.
Any help much appreciated.

Julian

Try the usual.

Remove the case cover and see if the CPU fan has died, clogged or fallen off.

Try it with ONE STICK of RAM.

Thanks Bob, but it didn't work. Fan was dusty but operative and nothing changed with or without second RAM stick. Still getting 'Windows Protection Error'

Any other thoughts? Thanks
