Windows problem

Jul 26, 2007 8:46AM PDT

I have been having problems with my computer for a few days. About three days ago it started getting very slow and then froze up to the point that I could not even power it off. I unplugged everything and plugged it back in and it was working fine until today, when it did the same thing. At first it started going very slow, and then completely froze. I wasn't even able to turn it off without holding in the button again. I unplugged everything and rebooted, but kept getting stuck on the "Windows is starting up" screen every time I would reboot. I just did some reading on here and found a thread that said to press F8 when booting up and click "last known good configuration." That worked and it is now rebooted and everything looks fine, although I haven't tried getting on line or opening anything up, because I wanted to check here first. I am wondering if this means that something is wrong with my computer, and is it going to happen again? Is there anything that I should do to see if everything is working correctly not that it is rebooted? I am running a virus scan with AVG right now (I am working on a different computer at the moment). I have Norton and it hasn't told me that I have had any viruses recently, although a few weeks ago I did have one and it said it was taken care of.

I have an HP Media Center, less than a year old, with Windows XP. I am not very computer literate, but I do have software installed that I need to use for my job and also school software that I have spent four years working on, and I am so afraid of losing these programs and/or not being able to work.

Thanks very much for any help!

Dawn

This could be heat,hardware issues,etc.

Do you have norton and avg anti virus on the same computer,if so this could cause a conflict. The rule of thumb is to have one anti virus enabled, same also for firewalls.

Try AVG ANTI SPYWARE

Scan in safe mode with avg anti spyware and your AV.

Hi Tom: Thanks so much for helping me. Up until today, I had only Norton installed. I really don't care for Norton, but was told I had to purchase it for a previous job that I had. I thought today that maybe I had a virus and should download something else and try it, so I downloaded AVG and am running the scan right now. Since I paid for the Norton already, should I just uninstall AVG? It was the free trial. I will take your advice and run my AVG anti-spyware in safe mode.

I did reboot it and it booted back up fine, so hopefully it is taken care of, at least for now.

I appreciate your help!

I don't care for norton either. You can have both just don't have more then one enabled,as in real time monitoring.

Also use the AV in safe mode.

Thanks again for your help, Tom. Well, I woke up this morning and it is doing the same thing: Windows will not start up. I am now trying to decide what to do. I am sure it is still in warranty, but need to find my receipt. I am pretty positive it has been less than a year, though. I called Best Buy and they said if it is under a year, they will look at it for free. If you were me, would you go that route, or try to do the system restore first? My main worry is losing the software that I have installed, which would basically be career suicide. They told me they could back up everything for $99.00 for the first CD, which sounds like a lot to me and something I can't afford at the moment. I think I could maybe call the manufacturer of the software and they might help me for free.

Just want to know if you were me, which route would you go first, system restore or take it in to be looked at?

Thanks again,

Dawn

Trying system restore can't hurt,go for it.

System restore

Okay, I will! I just do that from the safe mode boot menu, correct? Will I lose all files on my computer?

Thanks for you help. I am so grateful to have a place like this where I can ask questions!
