Windows PC & Linux Website Host

This question will show my woeful ignorance, but it can't be helped. I am the webmaster for a website hosted by a Linux/Apache server. I want to create a "virtual" website on my own machine, so I can test the things I post before putting them on the internet site itself. I can download a free Apache setup from Apachefriends.com, but there are a Windows version and a Linux version, and I don't know which one to use. If it is the Linux version, do I need to also have Linux on my machine? From other postings, I gather than I can run Linux from a CD without actually putting it on my hard drive. Will that work with what I'm trying to do?

The reason I'm puzzled about this is that I use Windows-based Dreamweaver to create the web pages and they post just fine to the Linux/Apache server, so I'm unclear as to whether I need to get involved with Linux at all or not. (I might add that I know nothing about Linux.) Can somebody help?

In short, you can install Apache in a few minutes and find out. Why not try this?

Hint: Should work.

Webmaster? OK...

Use the version that works on your system. If you use Windows, use Windows software on it. If you are using Linux, then use Linux software. The end files don't care which version made them. This is the same on any system.

I also have a website. Most people seem to roll their own code these days. I use a publishing program (Serif PagePlus) that can spit out HTML code as well as spitting out code to a printer. The server does care how the files were created as long as they work.
