Windows NT 4 HELP

Feb 11, 2009 7:54AM PST

Can anybody please tell me what to do? I have
an old computer with PII and 64MB of RAM and
i want to connect it in LAN with my other
comp with WinXp on it, I got tired of Win98's
unstability and illegal operations and want
to try WinNT workstation 4. So i need help
about what to install over it. What service
packs, with what encriptions and how to make
it most suitable for playng games on it
(Counter-Strike and Starcraft mostly). And
please, if anybody knows any links to service
packs except for those on microsoft.com
becouse i don't really get their site
anymore. My last download from microsoft.com
was DX7 cca 5 years ago. Please guys, thank
you all.

WinNT 4 HELP
Feb 11, 2009 9:08AM PST

Thank you for replying Bob. The thing is that i dont have any service pack installed on my WinNT 4 except for sp1 that came with the installation. So i think i need to install SP6 before i patch it with SP6a or am i wrong? Can i download SP6 from microsoft.com or...? And why is it that when i click on the link to download SP6a on microsoft.com, an unknown term is displayed. And it is clearly stated: Click here to download Windows NT4 SP6a?

Just a primer on service packs.

For brevity, just two sentences.

-> Service Packs are cumulative. Install the latest and you're done.

Thanks

Ok, so i only need SP6a right? Thanks man. The thing is that i read somewhere on this forum that i would need to download the whole pack of WinNT 4 service packs and that one such pack is aprox. 600MB big. So i tought that i need every one of them.

No. But are you changing the question?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299444 notes the post SP6a rollup.

You asked -> "Ok, so i only need SP6a right?"

Above I noted to install the latest and then run Windows Update. Sorry but you seem to not want to take the easy path. Why is that?

No Internet connection on NT machine
Feb 11, 2009 11:29PM PST

Sorry, i did not stated already that i don't have an internet connection on my NT machine so i can't do an auto-update. I don't even have a network support on it. All i did is installed it. And now i think that when i patch it up i will be able to install everithing much easier or maybe i will get a network support with the latest service pack. I can't install my network card drivers becouse i don't have them on CD. I downloaded them and throwed them on a floppy but i had to compress them and then i realised that i can't install any ZIP/RAR extractor on NT sp1. So that took me nowhere. And will i need to install PCI support on NT 'couse my ethernet card is on PCI. Sorry for all of these, maybe, stupid questions man, but it is my first encounter with WinNT. It is everithyng so confusing. THANK YOU AGAIN.

That helps.

Most of the SRP is about network security so you can skip that.

Put SP6a and your directx you want on a CD and you're done.

-> Let me be clear that the days of floppy disks are over. If you must run a machine without a working CD drive then you need to use an OS that fits that era.
