Resolved Question

Windows Movie Maker deleting my files?

Mar 25, 2015 10:38PM PDT

I was using WMM and I had finished a very complicated project on it. I had already saved it as a WMM Project but I needed it as a video, so I went to save it in the different format. While it was saving (at 57%), I moved the files that were in the project to another folder (I know it was stupid!) but instead of only deleting the files or just cancelling the save, it completely vanished with my files. They are gone. They are not on the recycling bin, I have searched my entire computer. What can I do to get those back? It seems like they were consumed into the void.

a. Backup.
b. Don't move if this is the last copy, but COPY then check the results.

It sounds like you have an unsafe work flow. That is, you need to rethink your process or steps to avoid loss in the future.

As to recovery, my bet is this is not coming back. Take it as the lesson for backup, copy versus move and never reach behind an active app's work to copy files out while a save/transcode action is in progress.

Did you try restoring the lost file using Volume Shadow Copy

ShadowExplorer can help you to recover the lost files using Volume Shadow Copies, (assuming Windows actually made copies of the lost files)
