Windows Messenger

I have Windows Messenger as a program which I never use. What is the difference between that and MS Instant Messenger. I had IM and I saw an article that said instant messaging could provide access to your computer files by unauthorized persons. I uninstalled the program. Was I a ***** cat? Soddy
