Windows Media Player Trouble

Nov 13, 2004 6:15AM PST

Running WinXP; Win Media Player 9 series

I recently used Media player to copy music to my hard drive and now every time my browser downloads a media file to play Media Player opens up to play it rather than it playing in the browser as it did previously.

I think it may be because it thinks it's the default player, but I can't figure out how to fix that.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Very often this is a "per web site" option. I mean that some web sites are written to play sounds embedded within the web site, whilst others are written to open up the default player.

You could try this. In Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu then select Internet Options, then in the Advanced tab scroll down to Multimedia and if there is no tick in the "Play sounds in web pages", place a tick there, then click Apply.

That sometimes works, but like I said, it could also depend on the way the web page was written.

thanks for the input. Everything seems okay in the Multimedia tab as far as what you said to tick.

What I don't understand with the "per website" option is why it only does it now after I used Media Player, but never did it before even on the same sites.

very perplexing. Can anyone tell me how to not have Media Player be the default player?

thanks as always. My computer would be in the trash if it weren't for this place =]

other players...
One of the best players of all kinds of files is a freebie called IRFANVIEW, which can be downloaded from the IRFANVIEW.COM website. When you install it, you can select what file types it will open and which ones will still be opened by Media Player.
I have used this program for over 4 years and it is flawless. Every year the developer adds new file types that it handles. Video, music, and a boatload of others... I keep Media Player just so I have it for experimenting, but for regular use IRFANVIEW is the best.
Give it a try. Happy - RG

Just a little more info on files types if it helps any. With XP, you can go to "My Computer". Then click on tools/folder options/file types. It lists all the registered file types. You can scroll down the list and change the program that opens each one if you care to do so.
