Windows Media Player Problems

Dec 9, 2003 8:44AM PST

Somehow my windows media player gives me this popup error message when i try to open most kinds of files, including .wmv, .asf, .avi (certain kinds) , etc:

Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Error signature:
AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.2980 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 5d000cc2

And then it gives me option of sending error report or not..
Before Windows Media player worked fine with almost every kind of file, but now it just keeps giving me this error... I tried searching on the web for this error message, but none of them have "ModName: unknown"... And Ive tried reinstalling windows media player several times, as well as installing all the windows media codecs..
Could this be some kind of trojan or wat?

Do yourself a favor and go here to download MediaPlayer Classic: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/guliverkli/mpc2kxp6472.zip?download

It's free, far more configurable and capable than Windows Media Player (biggest difference is that it can play DVDs as well as QuickTime and RealMedia (with proper codecs installed)), no spyware, and it's less than a 1MB download.

If you give it a chance, I very much doubt you'll be sorry you did. And if it doesn't solve your problem, then you have more serious problems. Assuming you have an anti-virus program installed and keep it even reasonably up to date, viruses and trojans should be almost a non-issue.

1. Cannot Play Back the File and many other REPORTED Error messages

2. When an error occurs, a dialog box will be displayed prompting the user to indicate whether or not they want to report the problem. When choosing to report the problem, technical information about the problem is collected and then sent to Microsoft over the Internet. If a report is rendered and if a similar problem has been reported by other people and more information is available, a link to that information will be provided the user.

a. Were there no links or anything else provided?

b. Please. For your benefit, always report the entire error information this report reflects when wanting our analyses. Thank you.
