windows media player problems

On my laptop, whenever I try to play anything on my windows media player (WMP 11), after a moment or two I always get one of those boxes that says "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close." Then it forces me to either send the error reporting message or close windows media player. i've tried reinstalling WMP11 but i still get the same problems. Any ideas?

A very common issue.

Here's how to make this error happen. Download just about any video from the internet. WMP dies. Try this-> Play that file with VLC PLAYER and usually it works. I am not offering a fix for WMP as I have found it to never be a sure thing.

this also happens with audio

This also happens with audio, not just video. Is there another good all-in-one media player?

Yup. Try VLC PLAYER on that file.

I can almost win the bet that it will play in that player. If you want to try to fix WMP, research CODECs. Don't just slam every codec you find into WMP (that's not good) but find which one is needed for that content and only install one at a time. Sometimes works. Sorry but I lead off with the reason I don't offer a cure.

It's not just one particular file that crashes WMP

no, it's not just one particular file that always crashes windows media player for me, it's whenever i use the program for anything. If i try to play ANY music or watch ANY video, i always get the "windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to close" box. I do use VLC for any video codec that i don't already have, but i like using WMP for music.

Then ...

You need to explore each file that crashes and why. Microsoft has shown no signs they will be fixing crashes on encoding issues. That is, if it's not encoded their way....
