Windows Media Player For Vista Basic Is Denied

Dec 13, 2009 1:07PM PST

I think I may have screwed up and downloaded an update before the program itself. When I try to download and install Windows Media Player, I get a message that a newer version is already installed and the installation that I am trying to do aborts. I've checked the hard drive. Media Player doesn't exist on my system. Any advice would be appreciated!

So Media Play Can't Be ADDED To Vista Basic?
Dec 13, 2009 10:35PM PST

Thanks for taking a look at my problem! I found the posting that you sent me to before I admitted defeat on figuring this problem out myself. But just because Vista Basic didn't COME with Media Player, I didn't take that to mean that it couldn't be downloaded from the Microsoft site. Maybe I'm wrong. But here's the exact error message when it tries to install: "More recent version 11.0.6000.6353 installed. Can't install older version 11.0.5721.5146 to install files or repair current version". That message made me think that I had somehow downloaded an update ahead of the program itself.

I'm going with no.

I looked at it and it looks like not only is it not supported but it is locked out.

Sorry but if a media player is needed why not the others?

Just checking

I note that web site mentioned Windows Media Center, not Windows Media Player.

The web site below seems to say WMP 11 is available for Vista Basic;
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/media-player-11.aspx

Did I miss something here?

To amsuco: Are you sure you don't have WMP already installed? According to the web site above, it is installed by default. What player opens whenever you play a .wmv file?

My WMV Files Don't Open
Dec 14, 2009 9:43AM PST

Hey Bob, I can certainly use one of those other programs if I have too. I just prefer to stick to what I'm already used to. But installing something else to play my WMV files isn't a problem if that's what I have to do.

Mark, NOTHING is opening my WMV files currently. I was holding out for trying to get Microsoft's Media Player installed. I figured that I was just doing something wrong (especially with the error message that popped up) and it could be sorted out. I appreciate the input.

Next step.

Search your system. Either use Windows Explorer to navigate to;
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe"
{If your Vista is a 64 bit version, then the path will be;
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" }

Or use Start > Search for wmplayer.exe

If you find it, then open it, or find a .wmv file, right click it, select "Open with" and select WMP.

If you cannot find it, then it looks like Bob is correct. That would be strange, (not that Bob's correct, he always is, but WMP is not pre-installed!).

Screw it

Thanks for trying guys, but I'm not getting anywhere and I'm tired of messing with this problem. I downloaded VLC and it has a file association issue with the files that I would normally view on Media Player. So I didn't gain anything. Maybe eventually Microsoft will do an update of Media Player that will install for me. Thanks again for trying!
