Windows Media Player error.

Jun 7, 2005 5:17PM PDT

eMachine T6212. W/XP. Standard factory rig with additional 2x512 PC3200 RAM.
I was ripping music using WMP when the darn thing froze. control/alt/delete would not bring up the task manager so I had to hit the buttonSad and manually shut down my system.
When I restarted and opened Windows Media Player again and tried to rip a music CD, a dialogue box said similar to the following.
''Windows Media Player was incorrectly shut down and all plug ins have been disabled.''
Now WMP no longer recognises my DVD/RW or CD-ROM!
They both read CDs OK when not using WMP and they are enabled properly and recognised by Windows.
I went to ''Windows Media Connect'' to correct this and when I click on the devices button it is empty and the ''add'' and ''remove'' buttons are disabled!
I have used Windows Media Player for a long time and have never come across this before. Does anyone out there know the fix? HELP! I use WMP as my default player! By the way, WMP plays music from my libray and views streaming video fine still. Oh! Please don't anyone say reinstall WMP. I tried thatHappy

Keith.

Forgot something...

An icon has appeared in the system tray which, when I hover the mouse pointer over it reads "Windows Media Connect. Folder sharing has been stopped. A private local network address is required." I am using cable and I have ran the wizard to configure the network, but the icon remains as does the problem with WMP.

System restore?
Jun 7, 2005 11:56PM PDT

Wrong answer! Wipe out all the files I have spent hours copying to this computer? Thanks, but I need a fix for Windows Media Player, NOT a destruction of files and newly installed programs, but thanks for the reply! Where are the geeks when you need 'emHappy

Very odd.

I can use XP's System Restore and never wiped out my files.

Maybe you misread this to mean your Recovery or OS install CDs?

Sorry...

I did misread system restore as system recovery, but I have restored back to a time when it worked to no avail. First thing I did. My apologies to the earlier responder.
I have used WMP for many years without EVER encountering this problem. Got me beatSad

A thing about WMP.
Jun 8, 2005 12:55AM PDT

While it did work (according to Bob?) well in 6.4, it's had its on and off again moments as it grew and now with updates via Windows Update you never can be sure it is as it was before. Some patches can't be rolled back.

-> WMP's stability long ago had me looking to other solutions.

You have me convinced...

to use another media player. Which do you recommend Bob?

My mistake
Jun 8, 2005 11:23AM PDT

It was not a WMP error, it was mine! I downloaded some driver updates from MSI Live Update and they were not compatible with my hardware. I uninstalled and had the recovery partition reinstall the drivers and I am fine. Thanks for the feedbackHappy

Actually it's worthwhile to find out about other solutions.

It's great you fixed it.

Learning
Jun 8, 2005 5:26PM PDT

Thanks for your help Bob. As always, you know what you are talking about! I learn something every day. On this occation, I sat and thought, before fully blaming WMP, what I had changed since it last worked. Quite a brainstorming session, but I did remember downloading those drivers! I like WMP and, at least for the time being, will continue using it as I am used to the interface and can rip and burn with my eyes closed. Still can't figure out why system restore back to a time before the driver updates did not work??? Have a great day everyone.

Just FYI.

I have no cure for WMP woes.

When it dawns on you that WMP isn't as good an idea as sliced bread, come back and ask what else works.
