Windows Media Player 9 stopped working in Internet Explorer

Feb 4, 2005 2:31AM PST

I am using Windows 98SE and use a cable modem connection to the internet. I have Windows Media Player 9 installed (build 9.00.00.300Cool. Formerly, I had no problems playing video files in Internet Explorer, Recently, the set-up just stopped working.

When I click on a video file in IE6, a window containing the media player pops up and the player says "Ready...". However, when I click on the play icon one of two things happens: (1) It briefly says "connecting" then "ready" and nothing happens; or, (2) I occasionally get an error message that says "WMP cannot play the file. Connect to the internet ... and try again".

If I open WMP 9 as a stand alone application and enter a URL, I get the error message.

I have a Charter F-suite Security package running. I have WMP9 configured to allow the application to run.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thank you

Working now
Feb 4, 2005 5:20AM PST

After trying your suggestions (which at first seemed like they didn't help) and playing with the system a little more, I started to get several different kinds of error messages.

Then I shut down the computer and restarted it.

Now, the WMP problem seems to be solved.

Thank you for your help.
