Question

Windows media player

Nov 20, 2014 10:18PM PST

When burning to disc from my hard drive using the Windows Media Player, despite opting for the disc to be played on all CD players, the disc only plays on the computer??

I don't use the facility very often and have not had this problem until recently. I have checked all my settings but to no avail.

Is there a simple solution or should I download the Media Played again (assuming this would solve the problem) ?/

Two possibilities:
1. The disk has the wrong format.
2. The player doesn't like burned disks.
From a distance it's impossible to see which of the 2 applies. That's a task for you.

For #1, tell us what files you see on the disk in Windows Explorer and if it's different from a normal retail CD.
For #2, try 2 other CD-players.

Downloading again (if possible) doesn't seem the solution anyway.

Two more questions:
- what OS and what version of WMP?
- what filetype did the source files have (wav, mp3, ogg, wma, ...)?

I do appreciate your reply but unfortunately I am nearing 80 years old and not completely computer literate so, as I don't know how to retrieve the information, am not able to answer the questions posed except that the media player is Jnk.

I do apologise.

That's an unexpected answer.

Windows has a program called Windows Media Player, and I assumed you used that. Now you say that your media player on the PC is a program called Jnk, a program that Google doesn't even know.
But that doesn't change my questions.

Answer
Open and Closed sessions
Nov 20, 2014 11:17PM PST

Looks like this is a case of a disk burned in an open session. Such a disk will only be recognised on the computer the session was opened on. An open session allows other files to be added to that same disk later.

For a disk to be recognised by other computers the session must be closed after the files are copied. WMP has a setting/option to close the session after burning.

A closed CD cannot have files added to it afterwards.
