At the end of the slider at the bottom there is a tiny fast-forward button labelled 'Fast Play'. When pressed, the music or video will play faster. If this button looks like it is depressed, click on it until it is no-longer pressed. This may take several clicks, as there are several speeds you can set it to.
Also, on the drop down menus at the top, go to Play>Play Speed and make sure it is set to 'Normal'.
Some of these settings have keyboard shortcuts, which you could perhaps have accidentally activated.
I hope this solves your problem!

I have a relativly new Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. it came with win XP Pro SP2 and it is currently up to date according the the MS windows update page. all relative update are installed. Anytime I use Windows Media player 10 Ver 10.00.00.3990, after 30 minutes or so it begins to play fast, like your are fastforwarding it. This happens to music off my hardrive or when streaming off the web.
I have looked everywhere and can find nothing that seems to help!
