You need a DVD player such as WinDVD, PowerDVD or other to play DVDs. WMP already has all the CODECs required to play DVD, but is missing the not-FREE license to play DVDs.
It confuses some that DVD playback is not free, but there are ways such as a GEEXBOX boot CD to play DVDs if you want.
The cheapest way to get DVD player software is to buy a DVD Recorder and have it bundled with the drive.
