Windows ME: windows protection error, system halted

by Brewrocker / April 11, 2005 7:47 AM PDT

I have a HP Pavillion running Windows ME. After the splash screen, I always get the "Windows didn't finish loading.... start up normal/logged/safe mode" screen. When I choose start up normal, the splash screen will come up and then the computer restarts again, in a never ending cycle. When I choose safe mode, I get the bsod "windows protection error, your system must restart. system halted" error screen.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried Safe Mode?

And using System Restore?

Restore it to a date when it was working OK.

Start > Programs > Accessories > Sytem Tools > System Restore.

Ok, one problem solved, another problem encountered. I used the C:\windows\command\scanreg/restore option and I was able to get the computer to boot up normally to the desktop.

However, now I have found that the dial up networking has been removed from the computer. With using Windows ME, is there anyway to get the dial up networking installed without having the Windows disk? This computer was bought used and it didn't have the Windows ME disk with it when I bought it.

Thanks again in advance.
