Windows ME Network

How can i connect an ethernet to a windows me machine. I have an nic card that came originally with the computer and i connected the ethernet. But every time i try to go on the internet, it says page cannot be displayed and to check my internet options,etc... Is there a way to check if the computer even detects the network connection? THe computer is a Compaq 5009SR.

I think the problem is

the ethernet cable. It is different from my other ones. I only got it because it's long enough. The connectors fit in both the router and computer though. However the wire is almost half an inch long and is flat, different from a round and thin ethernet cable. Which one of these should i get CAT-5 Patch Cable, CAT-5e Cable, CAT-5e Patch Cable, CAT-5e UTP Crossover Cable, Category 6 Patch Cable, Category 6 UTP Crossover Cable, FastCAT-5e Patch Cable?
