Windows ME is no more. (for me.)

Dec 2, 2003 6:52AM PST

Yesterday the last Windows ME box in my world decided to make trouble. I had warned it not to, but that was the last straw.

A Windows 2000 license was available so I used it. To save myself time, I let Windows 2000 upgrade the OS. Results are pretty great and all I have to do now is look into why the sound isn't working.

I write this since the office banned Windows ME and with the passing of this last machine, I will not be able to do much other than share from memory, Google or the Microsoft KB articles. I will not be able to try anything firsthand or check where items are in the menu.

Sorry, but it was time to move on.

Bob, you certainly didn't leave any money on the table when you upgraded.

Having said that, I don't know why I hated ME so. I never had the issues that many did(didn't with 98SE either). Perhaps it was because I was told that the machine would come with 98SE and when I finally got it Compaq had ?upgraded? to ME.

I sure enjoy XP Pro though.

It was becoming a support issue too.

The machine was the wife's. I had left it on Windows ME since the machine was installed, but it's been less than a happy. I had my first 1GHz Athlon on Windows ME and shortly discovered "issues." I stuck it out to find out what I could and last year went with XP Pro for my personal machine.

The better half has 2000 Pro at her work, so for her, it's no big change. And only a day later the effect for me is that she just uses the machine rather come home, kick the kid off it and reboot, it can be used...

I was bad and didn't fix the sound yet.

I'm sorely tempted to order a Turtle Beach card since I've used them before and since I reccoment such from time to time, I should have one around the home.

My current computer came with Windows ME. I had it in for around six months before I decided to wipe the hard drive and install Windows 2000. I haven't looked back and I have not had one lockup, BSOD or other OS-related problem.

All of my posts in this forum have been from memory or from my knowledge of things that are common to Windows ME, 98 and/or 95.

Well, I bought my winMe (HP) with 1 Ghz Athlon in February 2001 and really don't understand WHY people are having so much problems with it. I had more problems with my win98. I'm still HAPPY it runs smoothly without ANY problems. Yep, still a "happy camper" Happy

Two things never resolved.

1. Install GWBASIC or compile the following line with most Microsoft Basic compilers.

10 LPRINT "TEST"

That's it. One line. Doesn't work in Windows ME. Does work in NT, 2000, 3.x, 95, 98, XP and more. Very odd.

2. Symantec System Works. All known versions have an issue with ME -> http://www.bugnet.com/alerts/bugalert_010110.html

I do NOT have GWBASIC Happy

Yeah, I know with Symantec - BANNED it from my WinMe computer early on. Having NO problems at all with AVG and Trend Micro. Also NO problems with System Suite 4 and 5 formerly Ontrack now VCom.

Well, I hope I can keep my WinMe running for a while Happy

The LPRINT issue.

At the office, Windows ME was D.O.A. since we have some business tools that were in compiled basic. I offer this nugget as an issue Microsoft just shrugged at.
