"Windows Management Instrumentation Svc. Cannot Be Started"

May 26, 2010 12:28PM PDT

Hi All,
I get the above error msg. while attempting to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools. This always occurs during the 'setup' process. When I investigate, I find that the service is running.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 530S dual-booted with Linux Mandriva and Ubuntu. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Just dealt with that.

It was a machine I had lent to my brother. After a year it came back and this among other errors along with no ActiveSync (now called WMDC) so after a few hours and waiting a week to see if I had any other bright ideas I found too many missing registry entires. Seems my brother had used a registry cleaner.

That helped me along since we know these can do deep damage.

It's works fine now. I used the recovery media on the laptop and everything works again.

Thank you for your reply R. Proffitt. What 'recovery media' did you use?

I used

I used the recovery DVDs that we made when we first setup the machine 5 years ago. To be sure we had made a copy of said DVDs for safe keeping and sure enough one set was lost so the spares came in handy.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for your assistance. Unfortunately, I don't have any recovery media. I ran a WMI Diagnostic and it revealed a slew of errors and warnings (printed 61 pages). It's not much help to me since I am a fairly new computer user (approx. 2 yrs.). This problem sprang-up when I was trying to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express With Tools Edition. I posted in the SQL Server forum but was informed that this is a Windows problem. Once again thanks for your help.

Best regards,

Glen

I'm a fairly seasoned user plus I write Apps for many machines from embedded to PalmOS to Windows to many others. You can imagine that I gave this repair a good try but when I saw how deeply the OS was damaged between the malware and the registry cleaner I knew it was time to restore from the recovery media.

Now about your recovery media. I can't find where you called Dell to order up the missing recovery media. These are CHEAP compared to a new license.

And with 61 pages of errors you can imagine finding a way to fix those will be nightmarish. And I'll add impossible without the Vista media.
