windows mail doesn't work with hostmonster email addresses

Feb 29, 2008 6:59AM PST

We recently signed up for a hostmonster domain for our small business. I have no problem getting email in outlook express on my desktop running Windows XP, but we cannot get my husband's new laptop, running Vista, to work properly with the email set up in Windows Mail. Using Horde, as was suggested by Hostmonster tech support is awkward and not a good option.

Is there a reasonable fix, or do we need to either find a better web hosting service that is compatible with Vista and Windows Mail, or find email software we can install on his computer that will work well with Hostmonster.
Help! Thanks.

You could try
Feb 29, 2008 9:20AM PST

You could try using "Thunderbird" as your email client. It's made my Mozilla, same people who made Firefox, and you can find it here:

Let me know if this works for you.

tried thunderbird
Mar 1, 2008 10:43AM PST

I downloaded thunderbird, set up the email account, and tried it, but it wouldn't even let me log onto the email account. I also tried setting up MS Outlook 2000, but that doesn't work either. It's got to be the Vista messing it up. I set it up in Outlook and sent an email to that address from my other computer with another email account, and it never arrived on the computer with Vista, but was received OK in Outlook Express on the computer with Windows XP.

Thanks for trying, though. This is such a pain.

I kind find it
Mar 1, 2008 12:39PM PST

I kinda find it hard to believe that it could be Vista failing all programs to retrieve email. If you can retrieve email from the host on another computer with any OS using any program, it should also work on Vista. I use thunderbird on my host and it works fine, so perhaps maybe it's a setting that was overlooked?

Are you getting a certain error message? Like maybe an authentication error... something that could narrow down the problem?

error message and settings
Mar 1, 2008 10:34PM PST

I went back through the settings several times, in case it was my error, and the identical settings work fine on the other computer. The error message is 0x800CCC0F
Server terminated connection...

I found references to this error message on other threads on the forum, and some of them refer to problems with Norton AV. Symantec's website suggests scanning and then checking to see that the email programs are checked as "internet-enabled" on the list. I'm going to do that shortly.

Will let you know if it works. Others have suggested turning off email scanning in NAV, which makes me a bit nervous.

A search
Mar 2, 2008 1:22AM PST

I did a search myself and you're right, the first few hits mention "Earthlink" "Norton" and "McAfee" and that Windows Mail (on Vista systems) is not compatible with either of the two Anti-Virus programs.

I guess my question would be whether you are using Earthlink, Cable or AT&T (or something else) and if that's the error messagfe you are getting in Thunderbird also, since it seems Windows Mail seems to have a known problem.

Windows Mail
Mar 3, 2008 9:29AM PST

It turns out that Norton is not installed on the computer after all. The Norton folder in Programs is empty, probably courtesy of the Geeks at Best Buy. I tried disabling the email monitor on both the Trend Micro and Spy Sweeper virus programs, one at a time, to see if they were blocking the mail from going out, and it still didn't work.

I think this email program just doesn't work with Hostmonster's email for some reason. If anyone is using Vista with Hostmonster and has no problems with email, I'd like to know what email software you're using.
Thanks

HOSTMONSTER DELETED 900 WEBSITES Join Class Action Law Suit
Sep 29, 2008 3:46PM PDT

I had two websites on hostmonster for over a year and last weekend they migrated my site without a proper back up and completed DELETED both of my entire websites along with 900 other websites. If you have had problems with hostmonster in the last three years, please get in contact with me to join a class action law suit against them. They are claiming zero responsibility for the horrific act. Not only do they expect us to rebuild our websites at our expense they are expecting us to be o.k. with the loss of revenue this has also created. Hostmonster generates millions of dollars each month in revenue. Corporate America - enough of your passing the buck. It's time for us to stick together and make they pay for their mistakes. Please contact me to join the class action lawsuit.
