Resolved Question

Windows mail destroys all my images!

Mar 14, 2013 12:20AM PDT

How do I switch off the function in windows mail that destroys all images I insert into the body of my emails by making them slightly smaller and also adds two ugly shadows which I do not want? Many of my images are small gif or png-images like symbols, etc with precise pixel definitions. These are all completely destroyed in windows mail!

Emails and embedded pictures are kind of an unhappy marriage. Another email program (Thunderbird is recommended) might be the best option you have. Worth a try, anyway, if no Windows Mail help comes along. Microsoft Outlook would be another option. It's not free, but as far as I know, there's a free trial somewhere.

By the way, do you mean Windows Mail (that came with Windows Vista, the direct successor of Outlook Express) or any version (which version) of Windows Live Mail? Those are different programs.

I have ended up with a Widows 7 on a 64 bit machine (one of the HP Elitebooks) and all those extra bits makes it non-compatible with outlook express which I used before I got the current machine. Outlook express did everything I needed for me and now I am stuck with this. I don't mind paying for a good system so maybe MS Outlook is the solution provided it accepts 64 bits.. I hate it when perfectly good systems are wrecked by software developers.

Odd. What is this 64 bit concern?

At the office we use the older Office 2003 and it's Outlook 2003 on Windows 7 64 bit just fine. Yes I do have to install Office 2003 SP3 afterwards but that's well documented so what's the concern here?

And why not Thunderbird? Free to try.

Yes I put thunderbird on a small sony ultrabook I have for traveling and I'm still assessing it and I must say it is good! I can for instance embed images from file and even edit them (like adding a frame for better visibility), which is another thing Windows have removed. But to right-click and see the original location of the image in my computer it will not do (that way I can check if the image is actually in the email before I send it instead of just showing like a ghost). These are tiny insignificant details for most but important for my functionality. All these image stuff is very useful for quotes and component prices I send by email to customers worldwide who wants quotes and detailed technical explanations.

Customer do like these quotes because they send them back to me years later if they want more information or updated prices! It looks like windows mail won't allow me to do these things as well as before.

Outlook Express doesn't run on any later OS than XP (Vista, 7, Cool, be it 32 or 64 bit.

Most XP/Outlook Express users that switch to Windows 7 are happy with Thunderbird. More happy in fact than they are with Windows (Live) Mail. So I would certainly give that a try before considering MS Outlook.
