Question

Windows machine cannot ping network

Mar 6, 2018 9:15PM PST

I have a network which includes a few unmanaged switches.

I have one switch which clearly works because other machines downstream work fine.

But there is one machine attached to that switch which will not acquire an ip. Nor can it ping anywhere useful on the network. PIng loopback seems to work fine. I have tried 2 different computers in the same location and both are having the same issue. Have used multiple cables as well.

I already did a network reboot and turned off all switches and back on.

Bypassing the switch and plugging computer directly into another upstream switch did not work either.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I have tried 3 cables

I have changed the cable from the hub to the machine that is not working.

I cannot easily change the cable from the hub to the other part of the building though because it goes through a wall.

If it didn't acquire an IP, why should ping work?

Can you clarify this?

Answer
A couple of things to start

Firstly, I'd check device manager to see if the the NIC shows as working. Next, I'd try giving it a static address that was within the range of the router. Try "ping" with the static address. As well, try to ping that PC's static address from another PC.
