Windows Installing driver / Can't install Driver in a loop

by martinl3 / February 21, 2010 1:14 PM PST

I have run Vista Home Premium for a year and a half on my Dell quad machine. The system came with Vista installed. About 3 weeks ago, after a Windows Update, I started getting the "Windows is installing a driver" pop up notice and then it comes up with the unable to install driver notice. I then get the pop up asking me what I want to do but it is only visible for a few seconds. It disappears on its own and the installing driver notice pops up again. It runs in a continuous loop. I have checked the "dont tell me again" option but it gets ignored. When I click the unable to install driver window to find out what is causing the problem, it says "device unknown". I checked Device manager and there are no Exclamation Marks shown on any of my devices.

I rolled back the system to a restore point prior to the update and all was well until a few days later when the next update ran and the problem re-occured.

This time I ran System File Checker and that stopped the pop ups but I still got the sounds associated with the pop ups so I turned them off too.

Yesterday, another update ran and the problem is back.

I have been all over the internet looking for an explanation but I can't find anything.

Any help offered would be greatly apprciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I found the problem. I don't know why it only appeared after updates and perhaps that was just cooincidental.
I had removed my printer and other peripherals, one-by-one to try and isolate the problem. I couldn't and hence the post. Last night I remembered an old USB external hard disk. I removed it and the popups stopped.

Sorry for wasing your time.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
