windows installer file corrupted.....how to fix?

Dec 7, 2003 8:39PM PST

windows installer is corrupted using win2000pro, and i don't know how to fix this....please help

i posted last night that i was trying to resurrect a Gateway intel p4 that had a virus and the system was completely corrupted and i was trying to reinstall windows2000pro.

the original gateway disks refused to restore the pc so i used fdisk to format and partition and then load windows2000pro....i had quite a lot of trouble with that as the pc could not read or access the drive the cd was in, but i worked out how to get the pc to install from the cd today finally!!!! (thanks ppls for help)

anyway i was doing okey tonight installing win2000pro, installed the drivers etc off the gateway disks, and put back in most integral programs inc antivirus. initial system scan with norton showed no virus'. i continued to install several popular applications off disks and set up internet account. upon dialing to the net to get update for norton, i received an error that windows installer was corrupt and/or there was a virus infecting main system.

after this i kept getting the windows installer pop up, like it was trying to install something, i click cancel but it kept popping up (it was doing this before the major format to) so either the fdisk did not successfully format, which i beleive it couldn't do as the gateway files were still in the background somewhere or something else is corrupting pc the instant i log on to the net?

so the question is how do i fix this corrupted windows installer. the current version is msi.dll is 2.0.

1. I noted possible issues at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6122-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=5095&start=0 in a new reply. Creating a new discussion loses the history of your problems. Not a good idea.

2. You didn't supply a "quoted" error message. Also, you may find something in the Event Viewer. It's also unclear what you have installed since the OS was installed. This lack of information is to your detriment when seeking help in forums.

well i had already posted this when i noticed you had very quickly put a reply on other thread which is why i said 'that was quick'!! i put a new thread as the topic line is quite different from the old thread, thank you! Silly

one of the messages i get is ""The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

i tried re-installing the windows installer file but it said it was already there and would not replace it.

the other message i did not write down , said that the windows installer was corrupted or there was a virus....something along that line.

installations after win2000pro included drivers for audio, video, pci etc.
norton anti virus 2003
office 2000 pro
update of windows media player 9 (off tools disk)
install chord wizard (off tools disk)
install winamp3 (off tools disk)
install adobe acrobat reader (off tools disk)
installed winzip8.1 (off tools disk)
installed cdex v1.5 (off tools disk)
installed neromix (off program disk) (friend very music orientated)

problems only occured when connecting to internet to update virus definitions for norton anti virus 2003. i was told to un install then re-install live update. went to add/remove software but could not access that page.

this was when i get error message for windows installer.
