Windows installer failing

A friend has a Dell desktop running Windows XP Home. They had some problems with their HP printer so they removed the HP software and are now trying to install a fresh copy from the HP web site. Each time they try, Windows Installer fails. How can we remove/re-install Windows Installer?

Usually, if it fails, there's an error message and an error code, which can be googled for help. Only having the information that "it fails" makes that totally impossible.

Another question: what happens if the software is installed from the original CD that came with the printer? Just like the first time? There's just less chance then that it's the wrong driver.

And one more: HOW did they remove the HP software? It might be tricky.

A rather intimidating thread about a problem installing an HP printer: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7813_102-0.html?messageID=3130137#3130137
The only positive point there: it was finally solved. But you won't like a remark like "Installing HP printers is bloody hell sometimes." It's not the language we prefer on the forum, but sometimes it's just plain true.
