I'm not sure what step you speak of...

But at one step we have to remove that CD or the install starts again. So far I see a procedural error.

this is what i did before , after i create the partition then format then windows copy the files over from cd to the hard drive then when windows needs to restart to boot from hard drive so that it can use the cd ( i thought)
but if after all that i i take the cd back it wont load and i have to put the cd back into to get anywhere then it just starts again.
there should be press any key to boot from cd but its not there for some reason.

In reply to: re

Partition, formatting done with other the XP CD can lead to install problems. Why not use XP's installer to partition and let the XP installer format it?

That preparing the drive ahead of time can create issues, I usually run DBAN to make sure the drive has nothing on it. Then I boot the XP CD, take it's offer to partition and then let it format and install.

If that hangs up then I know to look at memory, hard disk and system tests.

Be sure to leave USB devices unplugged since such are not supported during install.

I have mine set to boot from the CD first. Try changing the boot order and see if it works.

The times I've installed XP, I "press any key to boot from the CD" once. When asked the second time, I just ignore the message and let it finish the installation.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
