Here's why. I had skipped installing the camera software and without that, Windows would crash everytime I browsed to the picture folder.
The issue is a VERY OLD ISSUE which I have flogged many a Microsofty about. It's been 15 years and this bug is still alive in Windows 7.

A friend purchased her first digital camera and I offered to help her download the images to her 'My pictures' file.
As soon as I click to open the 'my pictures' folder, the message 'Windows has encountered a problem and must shut down' appears.
I there a way to disable this, as I cannot open her 'my pictures' file?
It makes no difference whether I click on the 'notify microsoft' option or
click on 'don't notify microsoft'. Either way it just shuts down the 'my pictures' folder.
