Sounds like what System Restore was made for.

That's my first step back.

After that, your backups. As an app developer you know about backups.

Re: application

- Does system restore work?
- Can you go back to a recent image?
- Didn't this happen on your development machine?
- Does the exe-fix from http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/file-association-fixes-windows-10/ help?

Other questions:
- what exactly was "installing"?
- did you only "install" it, or did you run it also?
- are you sure it isn't caused by a virus that happened to come at the same time?
- can you reproduce it by deploying to another machine (be sure to make an image to go back to first, and disconnect from Internet)
- what is the "target type of an executable"?
- what's the difference between the type and the name of the type?
