windows file sharing issues

Mar 30, 2005 9:31AM PST

I currently have a home network setup with 3 computer, a router, and a cable internet connection. all 3 computers can access the internet without any problems.

howver, i have been trying to set up file sharing between the computers, and i've hit a wall: nothing seems to work.

I belive I have everything in Windows configured properly, and I ran through the windows troubleshooter.

According to the troubleshooter, it appears as if computer 1 on the network is not able to ping computer 2 (and vice-versa, including computer 3). Windows seems to think this is a hardware problem, but my rationale is if all the computers can connect to the internet properly, then the hardware obviously works.

So, does anybody have any suggestions as to why I can't ping a computer that's 15 feet away from me?

I figure if I can get the Ping-ing problem solved, the whole file sharing thing will start working as well. However, any and all suggestions are welcome...

Thanks for your time,
Yoni

ping
Apr 8, 2005 3:10PM PDT

i'm using XP Home, NOT professional. i used to have pro on an old computer, and i remember that whole permissions thing (it was a pain). but home does not appear to have the permissions thing at all.
anyway, my problem is not getting the folder shared, its simply connecting to the other computer (which i can not even ping).
thanks anyway.

what other devices...

..do you have showing up in the Network Connections?

Your network connections could have been "bound" to a 1394 adaptor (lots of Dells), or a network bridge may be malfunctioning.

Tell us the makes of the PC's and the installed hardware.

Also, have you tried to uninstall the network adaptors from Windows Control Panel, shut down, re-started, and then let the network configurator do it's thing?

A few basics
Mar 31, 2005 11:20PM PST

My first thought was Firewall, but I see that has been addressed.

ON ALL PC's:

If using Windows XP and a third party Firewall, make sure Windows XP Firewall is disabled.

Make sure File and Printer sharing is turned on.

Are the IP addresses of the PC's in the same range? i.e. 192.168.100.xx, if DHCP from say the router (assuming you are using a router) then they should be, if manually setting them ensure they are.

WinME & WinXP PRO

I'm having trouble sharing between two systems that have WinME and XP Pro. Is there anything that I'm supposed to do special with these?

Start from the XP Pro PC....
Apr 2, 2005 5:25AM PST

...and use the New Connection Wizard.

Fire up the XP Pro PC, and KEEP THE OTHER (WinME's) UNPLUGGED FROM THE NETWORK (remove the RJ-45 cables for both).

On the XP Pro PC, Create your LOCAL network.

Make sure you set up as a WORKGROUP, not a Domain;
also...since you're using a ROUTER, remember the selection for internet connection would be "this computer connects to the internet through a hub....".

At the end, you'll have the wizard bring up a screen with options to create a "Network Setup disk...". Get to a trustworthy floppy, make yourself a disk!

Next, UNPLUG THE CABLE/DSL CONNECTION FROM THE ROUTER, AND PLUG IN THE WinME PC's. SHUT DOWN THE SOFTWARE FIREWALL ON ALL 3 PC's.

Pop the floppy into each of the WinME's, run the network setup...and you should be golden.

EXT IMP... NAME each PC with a different name...

Reason I work from the WinXP Pro backwords is 'coz that operating system has NT features...including domain browsing..

You should have a functioning network...and FILE SHARING is a matter of permissions...earlier posts here have addressed that issue.

Once everything seems to be working as it should, shut all 3 down, connect all cables back, restart Win XP Pro first. Check it has internet connectivity. Next, start One of the WinME's...check it has internet connectivity, and "can see/be seen" by the Win XP Pro Pc....move on to the last one...

Laptop and desktop
Apr 3, 2005 8:30AM PDT

thx 4 the reply, I guess I should have let you know the xp pro is on a laptop and winME is on the desktop. Can I still follow those steps?

Right now I have them both hooked up and sharing an internet connection. I guess I'm just trying to share(files) between the two. Do I have to still follow those steps above. Forgive me for not making sense. I'm new to this.

...right on...
Apr 3, 2005 4:48PM PDT

...would strongly suggest you use the steps outlined.

WinME/XP Pro networking gets to be simpler when the WinXP Pro networking wizard (and setup disk) are used.

Good Luck

Windows file sharing issues in wireless
Sep 18, 2006 12:46PM PDT

I have been looking around for this information in many other sites and couldn't find the answer. Finally, I played around with my XP setup and I am finally able to view the shared folders using my laptop (wireless connection). I thought this may be able to help someone with their file sharing issues within WinXP

My problem was:
I am not able to view the other computers (Wired) using my laptop (wireless). My wired computers seems to have no problems viewing each other's shared folders, but I was not able to view it from my laptop.

Here is my setup:
DHCP disabled (Static IP's on all PCs)
All PC's are connected to a router
WinXP Professional on all PC's
At least 1 folder shared on each PC

The solution:
1. Right-click on [My Network Places] and click on [Properties] (Or any other way you may use to got to your NETWORK CONNECTIONS windows.
2. Right-click on the network adapter you are using to connect to your network. (Either the [Wireless Network Connection] or [Local Area Network]
3. Double-click on [Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)]
4. On the bottom of the GENERAL tab, click on [Advanced]
5. In the ADVANCED TCP/IP SETTING window, click on Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
Note: If you notice this page, under the "default" NetBIOS setting, you will see the note:
Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server. If static IP address is used or the DHCP server does not provide NetBIOS setting, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
6. Click the OK, OK, then OK again. You now should be able to see all of your shared folders from the other computers when you click on [My Network Places]

Hope this helps someone, because it was kicking my behind for a very long time.
